Geographical Areas covered: (total for the Business Unit) - 5 Districts of Rajasthan, 1 District of Uttarakhand and 1 District of Gujarat. Total 13 Tehsils and 205 villages.

Estimated number of beneficiaries: 7+ lakh beneficiaries apart from COVID support.

With communities close to our hearts, we intensified our CSR activities during the COVID times to safeguard the lives & livelihoods of the individuals in our communities and beyond. In line with our commitment to further their wellbeing, we aligned our initiatives to their immediate needs.

At the same time, we made significant contributions towards PM Cares and Rajasthan CM Relief Fund as part of our CSR efforts.

  • Food security initiatives at grass-root level: We extended dry ration to ~1 Lac and ready-to-eat meals to 9 Lac daily wage earners and community people. Grain banks were created by 3269 Sakhi members and 400 Samadhan farmers across villages in the Southern parts of Rajasthan. Grain bank collected over 16720 kgs of grains which were offered to those have not’s in the villages. This has been an act of enablement where communities took lead to supplement needs within the communities. In addition, community kitchen through Sakhi served cooked food to more than 7000 migrant workers.
  • Launched “Koi Bacha Rahe Na Bhookha Campaign: 17,000+ families with Severe Acute Malnourished and Moderate Acute Malnourished children have been supplied dry ration & Take-Home Ration with the help of Anganwadi workers and ASHA workers.
  • Ensured Healthy environment: 1.3 lac masks and body suits were stitched by Sakhi, generating over Rs 8 Lac income. More than one lac PPEs (masks, safety goggles, disposable thermometer, face shields etc.) and 25,000 litres of Sodium Hypochlorite solution were provided to the District Administration. 3080+ PPEs were provided to frontline workers (AWWs & ASHAs) & 9490+ masks to needy families. In addition, regular sodium hypochlorite spraying was undertaken for 180+ villages. 23 PPE manufacturing machines imported into the country to manufacture PPE’s in partnership with Ministry of Textiles.
  • Health Program:- Awareness camps on precautionary measures against COVId-19 were conducted in the nearby villages. Various sections of the community were engaged through these camps and awareness was spread regarding hygiene practice. In addition, sensitisation drives were conducted through banners in 138 villages, and a signature campaign was driven where people took the pledge to follow the necessary hygiene practices to combat COVID-19. Mobile Health Vans were also used to communicate the message. These activities were carried out before a complete lockdown was imposed. In all, 540 camps were conducted, covering more than 16335 beneficiaries.
  • Ensuring the continuum for our Farmers: We reached out to 3600+ farmer to create awareness through digital & online messages on preventive measures during farm visit/work for harvesting amidst Covid-19
  • Leveraging Technology platform: Series of efforts were undertaken to bring in technology to ensure continuity of the programs. To name a few: e- learning platforms were explored for teaching the rural children & sharing of study materials; Audio described books were provided for differently abled children; Online Skilling sessions, grooming & placements were conducted; Grooming of teachers to prepare and conduct on-line sessions; innovative methods such as story-telling were adopted across our education programs; toll free helplines were embedded across our programs. Software created for real time data capturing & transparency enabled our Sakhi program to smoothly run the Micro-finance interventions.
  • Volunteering for COVID: 62 employees and employee relatives signed up for volunteering for relief activities during the COVID lockdown. Activities included support through dry ration, feeding stray animals etc. Additionally, 23 employee spouses voluntarily stitched close to 2,000 cloth masks during the lockdown, and these were distributed to employees and in local communities.

We extensively engaged & collaborated with District Officials, Local Community Representatives, SHG Members and Union Members to carry out these substantial response measures. Ensured Leadership Community connects to stay connected with the communities grassroot workers and respond to their needs and concerns.

Further, an exhaustive study was conducted by third party to evaluate the effectiveness of our efforts towards COVID.

PROJECTS
Project Khushi and Nandghar

Overview: - With an objective to strengthen the Anganwadi centers, HZL runs Khushi-Nandghar intervention which is being implemented in partnership with Government of Rajasthan. The project has strengthened the functioning of 3,145 Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) Centres in 5 Districts, benefitting over 1,60,000 children in more than 2400 villages across 5 Districts of Rajasthan. It caters to health, nutrition and pre-school needs of children in the formative 0-6-year age group. The company has upgraded 314 Aanganwadis into Nandghars and have plans to transform all the Aanganwadi’s within the Khushi ambit into Nandghars over a period.

Objective:
  • To strengthen the Anganwadi Centres while focussing on health, nutrition, pre-school and community engagement..
Footprints:
  • With strong focus on reducing malnourishment, health screening of about 1.32 lakhs children was done through 423 CMAM(Community-Based Management of Acute Malnutrition)camps.
  • Of these CMAM camps, 2302 children identified as SAM (Severe Acute Malnutrition); out of which 963 children have been moved out of this category.
  • With strong impetus on behavioural change towards malnourishment, 295 Positive Deviance (PD) Hearth sessions were organized benefitting 10400 mothers and their children.
  • While preschool education continued through WhatsApp and home visits, additionally, individual PSE kits were provided to all the children to help them continue their learning at home.

  • Community Contribution of INR 2.61 Crores was generated for AWCs, which is the highest in last 5 years. For sustainability and continuity of the projects being undertaken across the centres, Anganwadi Sustenance Committees have been formulated at 80% AWCs with 23490 core community members.
Project Shiksha Sambal
Overview

Shiksha Sambal is a project that supports the students of classes 9th to 12th in availing quality education. Focused interventions ensure improved learning outcomes for young minds through strengthening of the entire learning eco-system. One of the key activities is grooming of teachers in government schools across 5 Districts of Rajasthan.

Objective: To improve learning environment & outcomes with special focus on Science, English & Maths amongst children studying in class 9th to 12th in Govt. schools.

Footprints:
  • Program continuity and sustained outreach of 7232 children across 64 Government schools were key areas of activities during the year. Online platforms were utilized for this purpose, promoting buddy systems, home visits and sharing of study material.
  • As a result, about 85% students remained active in their studies even during the pandemic time. Study material was provided to all the students and their learning levels were assessed through open book test.
  • One of the achievements of the program was an increase in the overall pass percentage from 68.4% in 2016 to 79.5% in 2020.
  • Shiksha Sambal as a project shall expand its footprints to transform the learning environment and the outcomes to Grade 6 to 8 in addition of 9 to 12 grades over the next few years.
Project Unchi Udaan

Overview– Unchi Udaan project is built on the foundations of Shiksha Sambal and creates an opportunity for high performing students from government schools of company’s operational areas to enter Engineering institutions of national repute. Till now, 184 students have been associated with the programme. One batch appears for JEE exams every year.

Objective:To prepare young talent from HZL neighbourhood, for entry into IITs and other reputed engineering institutions

Footprints:
  • The second batch graduated this year with 100% passing results.
  • All students secured admission in government run reputed colleges. One student got admission in NIT Jaipur and 12 students in MBM Jodhpur.
  • Despite COVID we onboarded our sixth batch of Unchi Udaan, based on a stringent admission process, taking the total number of students benefiting from the program to 184.
Project Mindspark

Overview-As a personalized adaptive learning program, Mindspark Learning Lab provides customized and adaptive cloud-based learning solution to strengthen language and mathematics learning skill for Standard 1st to 8th students. This year, despite the COVID-19 outbreak, the program was offered online to the students to aid them to practice at home in their safe spaces for unhindered studies. The mobile version of Mindspark ensure uninterrupted learning to more than 1600 students

Objective: To provide personalized & adaptive cloud-based learning solution for students of class 1st to 8th .

Footprints:
  • The project activities were made available to the communities via worksheets, WhatsApp groups, Interactive Voice Response system (IVRS) etc. to benefit maximum students.
Project Jeevan Tarang

Overview Project Jeevan Tarang has benefitted over 660 Persons with Disabilities (PwD) in the last three years. The focus is on empowering Persons with Disabilities to become contributing members of their families. HZL has been catering to the educational needs of PwD. The difference that has been made through this program has been in terms of achieving improved learning of children having Visual impairment and hearing impairment. Out of the above, around 600 have been educated on Indian Sign Language (ISL) through a disciplined curriculum and 100 visually impaired in technology.

Objective: To empower Persons with Disabilities to become self-sustainable and contributing members of their families.

Footprints:
  • Due to the COVID 19 pandemic, students were educated through online or virtual modes of training like WhatsApp, Zoom, Google Duo and recorded videos.
  • More than 190 students have been actively engaged online and have developed a strong language foundation in ISL. Through ISL students are now able to express their understanding about concepts and has led to smooth classroom communications.
  • 38 school teachers were sensitized and were given training in ISL, opening communication in the classrooms and making education accessible.

  • Online workshop on women’s health (menstrual hygiene & sexual violence) has led to the girl student being able to share and seek support from family members for better health. 27 adolescent girl students actively participated in the workshop.
SUSTAINABLE LIVELIHOOD
Project Samadhan
Overview

Samadhan is Hindustan Zinc’s flagship program that reaches out to 13,838 farmers through agriculture interventions and to 15,103 families through livestock interventions.

Because of various interventions, there has been an increase of 12% in Maize production with the average production of 6.3 quintals per bigha.

Objective:To connect farmers and cattle rearers with better practices, technology and help them enhance their income through ensuring sustained market linkages

Footprints:
  • The project has introduced hi-tech vegetable cultivation program for production of exotic crops like Strawberry, Broccoli and Lettuce. Farmers with - Hi tech Intervention generated an average income of INR 90,000 and are now supplying exotic vegetables to star category hotels.
  • Through Livestock interventions, 6900 Artificial Inseminations (AI) were done through conventional semen, out of which 1461 female calves were born in FY 20-21.
  • 534 AIs were performed using the newly introduced cutting edge technology of Sorted Semen, which assures the farmer with 93% certainty of a female calf. 125 female calves were born from AIs using sorted semen this year.
  • In collaboration with the Animal Husbandry Department, 119 Animal Health camps were conducted across clusters, treating 42,995 animals.
  • Goat AI was introduced for the first time in the state of Rajasthan under SAMADHAN.
  • A total of 356 AIs were done and 67 Female kids were born.
  • Program continuity was endured despite the COVID, by connectivity through mobile-telephony and safe-guarding the Farmers and their families by ensuring streamlined market connectivity. Our Farmer Interest Groups across the region was further strengthen as our backbone for timely action and impact on ground.
Project Skill Development
Overview

Hindustan Zinc’s Skill Development initiatives aim at providing market linked skill-based trainings on various trades like General Duty Assistant, Unarmed Security Guard, Micro Finance Executive, Domestic Electrician, Data Entry Operator, Retail Sales Executive, BPO, etc.

This year two new centres were initiated, totalling to four training centres across 4 locations of Hindustan Zinc’s operation area.

Objective: The objective of the program is to provide market-linked skill-based trainings on various trades.

Footprints:
  • During FY21, 929 youths were trained in 17 different trades of which 677 are placed & 252 are undergoing training different trades.
  • Out of those trained, 73% have been placed with different organizations.
  • We saw a substantial increase in number of girls coming forward to opt for vocational programs like Electrician and Security Guards.
Project Sakhi
Overview

Sakhi, a flagship project, is aimed towards mobilizing rural women into self-help groups (SHGs) and developing their capacities around leadership, skill development, savings and entrepreneurship. Sakhi comprises of 2248 SHGs with a total membership of 27,517 women from across 6 Districts. The Sakhis or SHG members jointly hold a total savings of INR 11.62 Crore with interloaning worth INR 39.20 Crore including credit linkage of INR 6.57 Crore leveraged from banks

Objective: Women empowerment via multiple interventions.

Footprints:
  • In FY21, HZL moved digital by empowering the women with digital technology while ensuring continuity of operations. 202 tablets were distributed to Samuh Sakhis, who transitioned from manual book-keeping to digital, transparent and a real time way of book-keeping.
  • On International Women’s Day, Mrs. Kiran Agarwal, Chairman of Hindustan Zinc, virtually interacted with more than 250 Sakhis and inspired them to pursue their dreams to take up entrepreneurial initiatives and complete their education. More than 4000 women participated in events held across 7 locations.
  • The company has partnered with UN led women empowerment programs focused on second chance education to 370 women to promote continuity of education. These women will appear for 10th and 12th grade exams through Open School system. While another 700 women were benefitted through the improved vegetable cultivation, through improved methods and market linkages with an objective to double their earning capabilities.
Project Microenterprises
Overview

As an extension of empowering women and enhancing their economic capability, project Sakhi has strengthened its roots into promoting enterprises to create livelihood opportunities. To provide sustainable livelihood opportunities to our Sakhi women, various production interventions have been initiated for spices, pulses & pickles, textiles that have engaged more than 250 women. At present 11 microenterprises are operational, producing 72 different types of products.

Objective:To groom the SHG women into rural entrepreneurs

Footprints:
  • Despite the COVID 19 pandemic, a collective turnover of more than INR 67 lakhs were generated in FY21.
  • 32 Business Sakhi are actively working to promote sales of products manufactured in operational villages.
  • Under individual microenterprise, over 856 women were trained at the project centres. They are now exhibiting and selling their products at local market and at various platforms.
  • Project Sakhi has federated the women artisans under the brand Upaya by Sakhi. “UPAYa™” stands for “Fashion for Development- a platform that promotes women artisans to hone new skills and links them with the market, building a self-reliant social enterprise.
HEALTH
Overview

Multiple initiatives have been undertaken to support the medical and health infrastructure around company’s operational area.

Objective: To provide doorstep preventive and curative health services to villagers through well-equipped mobile health units & health institutions.

Footprints:
  • Currently the company supports the health infrastructure via 5 Mobile Health Vans covering 128 villages in Rajasthan and Uttarakhand.
  • The health care facilities include OPD, special health camps, awareness sessions through Information, Education & Communication activities and lab tests. Total of 1687 OPD sessions were held, providing healthcare to about 66500 patients
  • Support of Telemedicine was developed with incubation centre of IIT Mumbai for conducting telemedicine. It has been successfully launched in Zawar and Agucha.
WATER AND SANITATION
Overview

The company continues its interventions in water space with an objective to provide clean, safe and affordable drinking water to the community in addition to providing safe drinking water through tankers as a move towards permanent solution for Drinking water through the installation of hub and spoke model community RO plants.

The project includes the hub, which is the mother RO plant & Spokes are water dispensing ATMs with storage tanks and a vehicle that transports water from the hub to the spokes.

Objective:

To provide clean, safe, and affordable drinking water to the community through the installation of hub and spoke model community RO plants.

Footprints:
  • The company has installed a total of 7 RO hub plants and 28 standalone ATMs, providing safe drinking water to 35 operating villages, benefitting over 4600 households 16000 villagers.
  • In total, 13 RO Hub plants, 39 standalone ATMs are running in 52 villages in Dariba, Debari and Chanderiya locations.
Sewage Treatment Plant – This is related to Environment Initiative.
Overview -

Hindustan Zinc is running four STP’s, first one with a capacity of 20 MLD, with the twin objective of preventing untreated sewage from entering the city’s lakes and to reduce the freshwater consumed for industrial purposes. Another one with a capacity of 25 MLD to further reduce proportion of untreated water. Remaining 2 STPs with 10 MLD & 5 MLD.

Objective:
  • To prevent untreated sewage from entering the Udaipur city’s lakes

SPORTS & CULTURE
Zinc Football
Overview

ZF Schools (Football for All), uses football as a tool for social development and ensuring young kids have a platform to express themselves through sports. With the philosophy that “every child should have an opportunity to play”, ZF has set up 12 community football schools where more than 350 boys and girls receive football training by certified coaches.

ZF Academy (Football for Excellence) is aimed at nurturing talent to develop future football stars for the state and the country. At the heart of this initiative is a residential academy with world-class facilities and the countrys first ever technology-hinged football training centre at Zawar. The academy is currently training 40 children who are coached using innovative training programs with equal emphasis on learning and playing.

Objective:To provide best in class Football Training to rural children

  • To achieve grassroots development as well as excellence in football in Rajasthan.
Footprints:
  • Distance Learning Program (DLP) launched during Covid-19, which features online mentoring, video sharing, physio sessions and practice drilling sessions with boys at home.
  • ZFA U-17 captain Mohd. Adnan selected among top 25 players of National Subroto Cup and received sponsorship of INR 25,000.
  • ZFA U16 team won National Futsal Championship beating 6 states at Jaipur.
  • ZFA U17 team won National Nohar Open Football Tournament at Hanumangarh beating Punjab in the finals.
Pratibha-A Talent Hunt
Overview

A musical evening was supported by the company for promoting local talent and supporting cultural endeavors as a part of its CSR initiatives.

Objective: To promote local talent and supporting cultural endeavors

Footprints:
  • This year, the company launched ‘Pratibha - Talent Hunt’ to give an opportunity to local artists to perform globally. Entries were invited from all our operational districts of Rajasthan and audition was conducted in front of esteemed jury members Anup Jalota, Shovana Narayan, Pt. Charanjit Lal, and Pt. Ronu Majumdar.
  • Total 115 artists participated in the event. 15-year-old maestro Kaustubh Manipushp Kunj won the Talent Hunt.
Ajmer Dargah

Overview Hindustan Zinc is the CSR partner for Government of India’s Swachh Iconic Places initiative, a part of Swachh Bharat Mission. This initiative was rolled out by the Prime Minister of India under which the Company signed a tripartite MoU with the Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti’s Dargah and the Municipal Corporation of Ajmer to make the Dargah a clean and iconic place.

Objective: To make Ajmer Dargah a clean and iconic place under the SIP initiative of Prime Minister.

Footprints:
  • Work is progressing in phases. During FY 21, three big LED screens were installed inside the Dargah premises, for better communication and giving message on cleanliness through visuals.
ENVIRONMENT & SAFETY
Project Safety in Community
Overview

Safety is apex for Hindustan Zinc and to inculcate safety culture in nearby community, the company has developed Safety Modules for communities covering household and workplace safety aspects in rural settlement.

Objective: To promote safety culture in nearby community.

Footprints:
  • Total 200 community members have been given e-training that includes electrical safety, chemical handling safety, road safety, home based first aid etc.
  • The project is creating master trainers in the community through its development partners and spreading awareness into the length and breadth of operational areas.
Project: Community Infrastructure
Overview

Creation of an appropriate physical asset for communities is sometimes the most tangible expression of the company’s commitment towards their continued development. We have been working to create model villages with access to basic facilities, safety and infrastructure. Creation of any community asset is taken up after close consultation with concerned villagers.

Objective: To strengthen the Community Assets and thereby providing accessibility to basic amenities.

Footprints:
  • During the FY 21, several infrastructure projects were undertaken ranging from construction of community halls, classrooms in schools, roads, cremation centres and drains in villages as per the need of the community.
  • Water and health infrastructures like water tanks were constructed, and repair and maintenance in Primary Health Centre (PHC)and Veterinary Hospital were also undertaken.
Community Solar Light Project

Overview - Solar streetlights in villages have become a very powerful tool towards safety and convenience of villagers.

Objective: To ensure safety & proper illumination across the villages through a sustainable resource.

Footprints:
  • During the year, 597 solar powered street lights were installed.
Project Employees Volunteering
Overview

At HZL, a total of 1148 employees had volunteered for 117 CSR events, dedicating a total of 1795.45 manhours.

Some of the activities where HZL employees contributed:

Learning Indian Sign Language- Through this online course, employees learnt Indian Sign Language and moved a step closer to connecting with the hearing-impaired beneficiaries.

Skill based trainings- To promote structural and skill-based volunteering, employees took sessions based on their expertise like financial planning, cyber security etc.

Support an Anganwadi- This campaign focused on identifying needs of an AWC and motivated employees to participate and contribute into enhancing the facilities at community-based institutions. Through this campaign, Employees volunteered by providing the basic amenities to the Anganwadi centre.

Sakhi Stalls-To promote sale of products manufactured by Sakhi project beneficiaries, Sakhi stalls were put at various locations of HZL.

COVID Support- Employees and their families came forward and supported community during the tough times by preparing masks and connecting with community, contributing their one-day salary & also by contributing at PM Cares Fund.
